Pax by Sara Pennypacker Heartbreaking and beautifully written; the story of a boy and his fox amidst war. A boy is sent to live with his grandfather and must leave his pet fox behind. In alternating voices we follow the the boy as he fights his way back to his abandoned friend and the fox as he learns to survive in the wild. What I liked about it: Beautifully written and heartbreaking (in a good way). Who should read it: friends to foxes; those who like to cry when they read If you liked this, then try: Maybe a Fox by Kathi Appelt Sylvie and Jules are sisters -they are close; especially after their mother died. Their father has several "Do Nots" the biggest being Do Not go to the Slip (the Whippoorwill River) but one snowy day Sylvie runs fast to make a wish before the school bus comes and is never seen again. Jules is devastated but the mysterious appearance of a fox gives her some comfort. The fox, Senna, is connected to Jules and is drawn to her. Soon their lives will converge. Will tragedy be adverted? ES/MS Family, Grief, Spiritualism, Alternating Narration What I liked about it: I liked the relationship between the sisters- it felt very realistic to me. I liked how the idea around the fox and the catamount as guides for those characters that needed them. Who should read it: Those who like realistic fiction with a touch of magic or mystery. Those who like sad stories and how peple deal with tragic events and manage to carry on with their lives. Many of the stories involve outsmarting the fear inducing element form the story. ES/MS Folktales, Fear Fiction What I liked about it: The stories were short and from all different cultures so it was interesting to see the similarities and differences in the stories and what people fear and how they deal with their fears.
