The Best Worst Thing by Kathleen Lane Maggie is already anxious about middle school and her changing friendship with her best friend Kelsey. When the local grocery is robbed and the clerk is killed, Maggie's anxiety becomes full-blown OCD. In addition to her fear of the robber in the neighborhood; she worries about Mr. Gullick's rabbits and the bully from school, Gordy, who is also a neighbor. What I liked about it: I liked that the character of Maggie felt real. She had problems but they weren't unrealistic and things weren't always solved easily or even happily all the time. Who should read it: People who like realistic fiction and stories about real people. People interested in stories about mental illness (OCD) or social issues such as bullying and animal rights. Sunny Side Up by Jennifer L Holm Sunny Levin is sent to Florida to spend time with her Grandfather. We see in sporadic flashbacks that something has happened at home with her older brother, Dale that derailed the planned beach vacation with her family and a friend and instead she is in a retirement center with a bunch of old people. She finds a friend in the son of one of the employees who introduces her to superhero comics. Sunny is working through her guilt and frustration and fear of what has happened at home while trying to adjust to her new situation with her grandfather. What I liked: I loved the setting of 1976. It reminded me of things when I was young but I don't think it is too intrusive and would distract young readers today especially since it is a graphic novel and the pictures are what really detail the historical setting. It was funny and touching with just the right amount of sadness without bogging down the story. Who should read it: Those who like realistic fiction and stories about family. Those who like issues books where the main character is dealing with a problem. If you liked this, the try: |
